In addition to my writings and the reviews in the media, I have served on the Board of Trustees of The Phillips Collection and the College Art Association. I held the Edward William and Jane Marr Gutgsell campus endowed professorship at the University of Illinois, and a University Professorship at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. My awards include the Pulitzer Fellowship in Critical Writing, the NEA Art Critic's Fellowship, fellowships from the Dedalus Foundation, the Japan Foundation, the ACLS, the American Philosophical Society, and the College Art Association’s Award for Distinguished Teaching in the History of Art.
